Lucrece Phillips

Contributor and New Orleans Resident: Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time

Lucrece Phillips, Contributor and New Orleans Resident

Lucrece Phillips was a resident of the 8th Ward at the time of Hurricane Katrina. A New Orleans native, Lucrece is known in her community for her creativity and natural-born storytelling ability. She is a singer, poet, hairstylist and advocate for the vibrant culture of her city.

During Hurricane Katrina, Lucrece remained in her home with her family, as she was recovering from neck and back surgery, before evacuating via boat. Interviewed soon after escaping her attic by a Times-Picayune reporter, Lucrece recalled the horrors happening in her neighborhood.

Lucrece left New Orleans after the storm but felt the city pulling at her heart to come back home. She returned to her community in 2013.
