Lynette Boutte

Contributor and New Orleans Resident: Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time

Lynette Boutte owns a beauty salon two doors from where her grandmother was born in the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans, one of the oldest African American neighborhoods in the United States.

Lynette vividly remembers the vibrancy of the area, the closeness of the community, the celebrations, and the Black businesses that sat at the heart of everything before Hurricane Katrina.

Having survived the devastation of Katrina through chest-deep waters and the scorching concrete of the Claiborne Bridge, Lynette is now an advocate for the restoration of the culture and heritage of New Orleans.
